Connecting to ArcIMS Services

The following is an excerpt from ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Help for ArcGIS 8

Add Internet data by connecting directly to an Internet server

  1. Click the Add Data button . Add Data button
  2. Click the Look in dropdown arrow and navigate to the Internet Servers folder.
  3. If a connection to the server containing the data you want to use already exists in the folder, double-click the server name and go to step 9. Otherwise, double-click Add Internet Server to add a server to this folder.
  4. Type the URL of the Internet server to which you want to connect. For example, http://wms.ftw.nrcs.usda.gov.
  5. If you will be accessing secure services on this server, check Show secure services and type the username and password for the services. (This is how you access services that are subscription only.)
  6. If you only want to access particular services on this server, click Get List. A list of all services that are available on the server appears.
  7. Check the services you want to be able to access from this server.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Double-click the connection to the Internet server that you have added.
  10. Choose the service you want to add to your map and click Add.

How to add an Internet server to ArcCatalog

  1. Go into the ArcCatalog Internet Servers folder and double-click Add Internet Server.
  2. In the dialog that appears, type in the URL of the Internet server to which you want to connect.
  3. If you will be accessing secure services on this server, check 'Show secure services' and type the username and password for the services. (For example, this is how you access services which are subscription only).
  4. If you only want to access particular services on this server, click 'Get List'. A list of all services which are available on the server appears. Check the services you want to be able to access from this server.
  5. Click OK.

When a server that's been added to the ArcCatalog Internet Servers folder is not currently connected, you'll see a small red "x" on the Internet server's icon. For example when you launch ArcCatalog and look in the Internet Servers folder, all the servers will be shown as disconnected because you have not yet re-established their connections. Simply double-click the Internet server you want to work with to reestablish the connection.

Example of a server that is not currently connected. The server icon has a small red "x" on the right

You manage your connections to Internet servers in the same way that you manage your database connections.
